TURF NOTES. It has been pointed out that the Roseliill Guineas has proved a very false guide to the A.J.C. Derby. In twentyfive years only Biplane and Pliar Lap have won both these classics. Yet it is difficult to see how Sydney racing folk can ignore the form of Silver King, who on Saturday followed up his Hobartville Stakes success by capturing the Guineas. This son of the muchtravelled Tracery horse El Cacique raced four times last season. He began on 25tli October with an unplaced run in the Juvenile Stakes at Victoria Park (Sydney). He was also unplaced in the Jytvenile Handicap at Canterbury Park on 10tli February. At Moorefield on 21st April he won the Maiden Juvenile Handicap, while at Randwick on 12th May he was successful in the Two-year-old Handicap. His connections evidently fancy him as a stayer, as the only one of the big spring handicaps that he is engaged in is the Melbourne Cup, in which he has 7.2.

The story went at Ashburton that £1 10s of the £2 10s invested on Gold Cross on the win machine was the wager of a man who is one of the many victims of the depression. His reason for backing Gold Cross is said to have been that his Avife dreamt that the gelding Avon. Dreaming in advance the success of the extreme outsider of a field of fourteen is a real gift. Actually some stick • reason Avas necessary for anyone to support Gold Cross. He is six years old, and this is the fourth season in Avhich he has been racing, but until Saturday his total earnings AA’ere £7 10s, Avliich he obtained when he finished second in the Trial Plate run at Riccarton on 26th November, 1932. Importance avou that race Avith SAA r eet Agnes third and a big field behind them. It can be said for Gold Cross, hoAvever, that he has done A r ery little racing. At three years he had tAvo runs, both unplaced. At four venrs he ran the second already referred to and Avas thrice unplaced. Last season, his only outing Avas in the Noaucc Stakes at Amberley on 28th Anril, Avlien he Avas not amo”<T the first sir in a field of nine. In the Makl-m Stakes at Riccarton on 4th August he Avas not among the first seA 7 en home.
