ACADEMIC FREEDOM

SHARP AUCKLAND CONTEST. AUCKLAND, Friday. An election of two of the four graduates’ representatives on the Auckland University College 'Council was held yesterday. Usually there has been no contest, but this year three candidates were nominated, and a most spirited controversy developed on the question of academic freedom of speech. Complete freedom of opinion within the law was advocated by .Mr W. H. Cocker, 8.A., LL.B., F.R.E.S., who strongly opposed, the views held on the subject by Dr. H. Ranston, who, with Mr H. ,T. D. Mahon, sought, re-election. Mr Mahon did not enter this controversy, in which the professorial staff were divided between Mr Cocker and Dr. Ranston. The election resulted as follows: Mahon 625, Cocker 496, Ranston 391, informal 21. The official count has not yet been made, but it is unlikely that the placings will be disturbed. Graduates all over New Zealand were canvassed on behalf of the candidates in this contest.

(Mr Hollis Cocker is a son of the Rev J. and Mrs Cocker, of Masterton.)
