. Mr G. H. Mackley, General Manager : of the New Zealand Railways, will leave Wellington on Friday for Australia. The Rt. Hon. Sir Michael 'Myers, Chief Justice, who has been presiding over the Supreme Court in Auckland, lias returned to Wellington. A definite improvement is reported in. the health of Sir Robert Gibson, chairman of tbei Commonwealth Bank Board, who lias been seriously ill. The engagement is announced of Miss Mary Cole, only daughter of Mr H. Cole, of Kahamtara, and the late Mrs Cole, of Masterton, to Mr Henry Alexander Muir, eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. K. Muir, Featherston. A cable from Sydney announces. the retirement of Mr George Judah Cohen, chairman of directors of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, Ltd. Mr Cohen has been chairman since 1901 of the Associated Banks, and for fortyeight years has been regarded as an outstanding financial authority.
