TENNIS TOURNAMENT.

The fact that the North Island tennis championships are being contested in Masterton this season, in conjunction with the AVairarapa championships and handicap events, will be viewed with feelings of satisfaction by local supporters and players of tennis, as well as every resident who takes an interest in sport of any kind. The meeting commenced this morning on courts which rank among the best in the Dominion, so that there will be no room for complaint by or on behalf of the players. It is fitting that a big tennis gathering should be held in Masterton, as our town is the largest and most important centre in the AVairarapa, and as such has all the facilities for conducting sport on a large scale. Too often, in the past, the blunder has been perpetrated of playing an important tennis, football, cricket or other match at some out-of-the-way vilage in the AVairarapa, which is not only belittling the contest itself, but is an inconvenience to the players and the bulk of the people. The present tennis tournament is being controlled by as capable a band of officials as could be found in tennis circles anyAvhere in New Zealand, and it will certainly not be their fault if the gathering does not go down in history as one of the most successful ever held in the AVellington Province, and ranking with those splendid tournaments held in Masterton in prewar days.
