The retirement of Colonel E. W. Tate, C.M.G., C'.B.E., as stipendiary magistrate for Taranaki, is announced. He will be succeeded by Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M., of Wellington. Mr Tate reached the age for retirement .last July, but his term was extended to 25th January, 1932, by GovernorGeneral ’s warrant. Upon vacating ofhe will leave New Plymouth to ' "live in the Wairarapa, where he has property. Mr R. J. Weir, of Wellington, who has been appointed to succeed Mr J. E. Hanlon as Officer in Charge, of the Labour Department’s Masterton office, was farewelled by members of the Wellington Furniture Trades Apprenticeship Committee, of which Mr Weir was ■secretary. Mr J. G. Marshall, on behalf of the employers’ representatives, and Mr J. Ferguson, on behalf, of the workers’ representatives, together with other members of the committee, spoke in appreciative terms of the excellent services rendered by Mr Weir, who was presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen. A Press Association message from Dunedin reports the death of Mr Harold Livingstone Taplev, C.M.G., at the age of 57 years. For some time Mr Taplev had suffered from heart trouble. He was born at Semaphore, South Australia, in 1875, and arrived in Dunedin in 1893, and established his business of slapping, stevedoring and insurance agency in 1900. He served cm various local bodies, being chairman of the Otago Harbour Board in 1919 and 1930, and Mayor of Dunedin for two terms. From 1925 to 1928, Mr Tapley had a seat in Parliament as member for Dunedin North,. He only returned last Week from a visit to friends and relatives in Adelaide. A very enjoyable social and gift evening was tendered to Miss Winnifred Butter by Mrs IV. E. Bate and family at their residence, Church Street. The occasion of the gathering was to bid farewell to Miss Butter, who is shortly to be married. Muchappreciated vocal items were rendered by the Misses N. and L. Cocker, D. Wellington and D. Jamieson, and games and competitions were heartily enjoyed by all. After a dainty supper Mr A. E. Bate extended the good wishes of the company to the guest of the evening, who then opened the numerous gift parcels, assisted by her fiance, Mr G. W. Graham. Mr Graham suitably responded, and the evening was closed with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” A numerous and representative assemblage of mourners attended the

funeral of the late Mr Hugh Mackay, proceeded yesterday afternoon Masterton to the Grevtown cemetery. Included in the cortege were two cars loaded with wreaths. Amongst the mourners were representatives of the two Masonic Lodges in Masterton and of the Mart-inborough Lodge. Services at the residence in Renall Street and at -the graveside were conducted by the Rev. E. J. Rich and a Masonic service was conducted at the graveside by office-bearers of the Martinborough Lodge. The pall-bearers were Messrs. G. 11. Perry, 11. C. L. Robinson, W. G. Lamb, D. Thompson, S. R. Gawith, J. Andrew, E. Chalmers and Dr. 11. E. Webb. The death took place at his residence, Rex.wood Street, Carterton, yesterday, of Mr John Bcaven Eaton, at the age of 69 years. Tho late Mr Eaton was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs John Eaton, who were early pioneers of the Wairarapa. lie was born at Taita, Lower Hutt, and when a lad of nine years, came- with his parents to reside at Carterton. He later went to Ballanee when the present main road was merely a bush track, and after many years spent in the King Country upturned to the Wairarapa and took farming in Grevtown, where he lived for nine years. Twelve months ago he was taken ill and he never fully recovered. lie leaves a widow and 1 a family of three sons and one daughter. These are: Messrs Sidney Eaton, Dannevitrke; Roland Eaton, Otaki, and Eric Eaton, I’etone; and' Mrs L. Simmonds, Petonr. Ilis brothers are Messrs G. 11. Eaton, Masterton, T. R. and C. Eaton, Longbush, and his sisters are Mrs A. King, Carterton, Mrs W. Colman, Hamilton, and Mrs W. A. Renall, Parkvale.
