REPUDIATION,
(To the Editor). Sir,—lt is with a feeling of satisfaction that I read in yesterday’s paper of the stand you have taken against'this measure passed by the Government favouring one section of the community whilst putting hardships on another. The cry of keeping the man on the land at all costs, which has been the excuse, can be criticised apart from its moral aspect. 'Howmany farmers who cannot pay their honest and just dues are in this position from any causes apart from overinflation of land values ? Many of these speculators in farm lands would never make farmers except in such prosperous times that their sloth and ineptitude are not noticed. Others have made no attempt to secure their properties, but have used the high prices they got in American cars and other luxuries.
Until quite recently the townspeople had to pay high prices for food and did it without grumbling. Now comes the side of the man who has to sit down with no redress under the loss of his little income, the good money he found for the farmer and in most cases earned with the sweat of his brow, having for long years paid 8 per cent, for money loaned to him, and often getting such poor prices with no profits for his products. In his old age now ho has to worry about how to make both ends meet and under present legislation could be left without anything to live on. This state of affairs is causing such bitterness among people that next election it is safe to predict there will not be a united front against Labour. Perhaps it is most charitable to think of the present Government as a lot of short-sighted noodles, who may, in spite of their legislation lengthening their term of office, be forced to the country and thrust into outer darkness. —I am, etc., ONLY A WOMAN.
