BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present:—The Mayor (Mr T. .Jordan), and Crs. 0 'Leary, Saunders, Bussell, Free, Peacock, Murray, Jenkins, White, Low and Beethain. The application of the Masterton picture companies to show pictures on Good Friday was granted. It- was decided to grant the use of the Municipal Hall free for a community sing on Thursday night next, the proceeds to go to the Mayor’s Unemployment Fund. The cost of lighting .is to be charged. The Port Nicholson Cycling Club was granted the use of the Park frtr a meeting on Easter Monday at a charge of £B. The Ministers’ Association was granted the use of the Municipal Hall on Good Friday night free, the cost of the lighting to be paid for.
BOKOUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT
The borough inspector (Mr T. A Russell) reported as follows: —
Notifiable Infectious Disease —A case of pulmonary tuberculosis was the only infectious disease notified during February and to date this month. Plumbing and Drainage. —Fourteen applications for plumbing and drainage permits were received, and the usual drain-testing and plumbing inspections were carried out.
Requisitions. —The following requisitions were served: Plumbing repairs, 0; cut back encroaching shrubs and hedges, 17; clear noxious weeds, 7; remove rubbish, 3; remove fowls, 1; abate fly nuisance, 1.
Milk Supply.—The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis; 20 supplying farms were visited and oh
the whole conditions on the farms are very satisfactory. Several improvements are being carried out. Monthly Rubbish Collections. The monthly rubbish service is continuing to do good work. Dog Registration—Fees amounting to £6l 10s were collected during the month. Three dogs were destroyed. Traffic. —Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £39 10s. Four persons were prosecuted for breaches of the traffic regulations; fines amounted to £7. Drivers’ Licenses—Fourteen applicants for drivers’ licenses were examined, three failing to come up to the required standard. ENGINEER’S REPORT, Reporting to the Council, the Borough Engineer (Mr C. R, Mabson) stated: — Streets. —Hogg Crescent lias been graded, metalled, consolidated and tarsealed, and McKenna Street sealed for the full length. Colombo Road from Herbert Street to Kuripuni Street, and Archer Street, from Bannister Street to Church Street ,have both been metalled, consolidated and tar-sealed, and Olive Street from Perry Street to Lincoln Road has been uncalled and consolidated. The following footpaths have been repaired and tarred: —Kirton, Sussex, Hessev, Miriam, Casey and McKenna Street, south side, Dixon Street from McKenna to Craync Street, west side, and Cravne Street out to Queen Street; Herbert Street, new path from Colombo Road to Steer’s property; Worksop Road from Colombo Road to Kirton Street. Wrigley Street kcrbing both sides from Chapel Street to Villa Street have been completed and path will be regraded and reconditioned at the first opportunity. Te Ore Ore Road kcrbing on the north side from Opaki Road to Totara Street has been completed and path regraded, and the southern side is being laid at present, about half being completed.
Water.—During the month one new service and 17 renewals were put in. Three lead services were repaired Wrigley and Cole Streets and Plain Road. The main race, springs and filter bed have all been cleaned and grass cut. The general flushing of sewers and main dead-ends has been carried out. Building Permits. —During the month eight permits were issued, hayjag an estimated value of £BS2 10s. foes theeron amounted to £4 10s. For the corresponding period last year nine permits were issued, having an estimated value of £3076 4s.
