GARDEN PARTY

ST. MATTHEW’S LADIES’ GUILD

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

Favoured with perfect weather and an ideal site, the Garden Party held under the auspices of St. Matthew’s Ladies’ Guild in the spacious and beautiful grounds of Mr and Mrs Trevor Bectham, Toweett, Perry Street, on Saturday was a marked success. A very large number of guests thronged the grounds, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent by all present. The beautiful blooms in the Begonia House were a- centre of attraction foi many, and there were so many beautiful spots in the gardens that the time passed all too quickly for the guests. In the course of the afternoon two particularly attractive items were given on the lawn by the pupils of St. Matthew’s Collegiate School. The first was a country dance in costume, and the second a drill display which called for poise and balance. Both items were a decided credit to the girls and to Miss East, who trained them. Much appreciated selections were rendered by the Municipal Band. ‘Dotted about the grounds were various stalls, and these all did good business. Mrs E. J. Rich, President of the Guild, had a busy time welcoming the guests, and the secretary, Mrs J. Aikman, worked hard and saw that everything was attended to. The Baby Show caused much interest and the judge, Mrs James, had a hard task in deciding the winners, who were: Best boy under 12 months, Graham Newlaiul; best girl under 12 months, Ngaire Naismitli; beat bov over 12 months, Richard Free; best girl over 12 months, Betty Barnes. There was keen competition at the croquet and putting competitions. Ihe croquet ladder was won by Mrs Brown, and the angles by Miss N. Beetham. Misses Yalden and M.
