IMPROVED BALANCE

IMPORTS DROP £15,009,000

A further improvement in the favourable balance of the Dominion’s oversea trade is indicated in the returns for February, issued by the Customs Department. After making allowance for the exchange factor, theer is a surplus of exports over imports of nearly £6,-.-,00,000 for the eleven months of the financial year to -9th February. The exports last month were valued f.o.b. at £4,434,627, or £1,1:19,754 more than for February, 1931.

Imports at £1,804,492 were £592.0:10 less than for February, 19111, this notwithstanding that there were 29 days in last month. For January and February the exports at £7,.817,1:111, were £7SI',9MO better than for the two months of last year, while imports at £:’,977,244 were £1,4:11,339 less. During the eleven months of the financial year, from Ist April, 19111, to vffth February, 19:12, the declared value of exports decreased by £.1,592,824, compared with the eleven months of 1930-31. On the other hand, imports decreased by nearly £15,000,000. At £21,293,483, the imports for the eleven months were well under one-half of those for the corresponding period of two years ago.
