ESCAPED PRISONER
SEEN NEAR WAVERLEY.
NEW PLYAIOUTH, Friday
The search for Charles Bennett, the escapee from Hautu Prison Camp, has moved from Wanganui to the Waikawau district, Awakino. Bennett escaped three weeks ago with Edgar W. Allen, who was recaptured at \Y averley.
Bennett is thought to have driven up the Afanganui Road in a car answering to the description of one taken from Wanganui. The car was seen by a settler’s wife, who communicated with the police. The car was later found abandoned, and recovered by the police. The man was seen walking on the road, and subsequently at Waverley. A cheque book and other articles were found three miles from Awakino. The police are still searching the wooded country.— (P.A.)
