A STRIKE FAVOURED

EY EELIEE WORKERS. UNTIL STANDARD WAGES PAID. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Whether all workers on relief jobs should cease until standard wages were paid was the question placed before a mass meeting of relief workers held m the Winter Slioav buildings this evening. There Avas an attendance of over two thousand, and although the motion favouring a. strike Avas declared carried by a delegate on the platform, it was impossible to determine the exact position on account of the pandemonium that reigned. The meeting lasted for two hours. Delegates were present from Hutt, Eastbourne, Khandallah, Happy Valley and Wellington. A majority of the speakers, if not all, criticised the No. 5 Scheme and the conditions under Avliich they were asked to Avork, and advocated “direct action.” The Social Welfare Committee of the Wellington H'ospital Board has decided that any man avlio refuses work when it is available will he refused relief. The Trades and Labour Council today decided to recommend relief workers in the Hutt Valley and at Eastbourne to return to Avork, the Council undertaking to seek redress for their grievances and to endeavour to settle the question of standard wage payment by negotiation. —(P.A.)
