WELLINGTON BEAT CANTERBURY. AUCKLAND, Monday. The final match for the Wilding Shield, Avhich was concluded to-day, resulted in a win for Wellington, avlio defeated Canterbury by seA'en rubbers to five. The day’s play was robbed of a great deal of interest by reason that Angas, Canterbury’s leading player, was overtaken by a severe attack ot biliousness. Although not feeling up to the mark, he played through a long doubles match with Barnett against Wilson and Roussell, but Avas unable to participate in the doubles which were left unfinished on Saturday. The result AA-as that Canterbury Avas forced to default this match. As the other match Avent, hoavever, this contest Avould not have affected the ultimate result, although it appeared that Canterbury Avould haA r e Avon the match against Wilson and Roussell but for Angas’s illness. Barnett, the young Canterbury player, suffered his first reverse in the singles during the series, being outgeneralled by D. G. France. Results:— Singles.—D. G. There are seventy entrants for tho men’s championship, and thirty-five for the Avomen’s championship, includ-ing-five members of the Australian team. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., and the Wairarapa Farmers’ Cooperative Association, Ltd., played at the Memorial Park grounds last Saturday afternoon, resulted in a win for Borthwick’s team. The contest was a very even and most enjoyable one. Singles and doubles matches were played and Borthwick’s won 9 matches to the W.F.C.A. Ltd., 6, while tho former team won 124 games to the latter’s 119.
