RACING

FIXTURES. Jan. 27, 23. —Pahiatua. Jan. 29, 30.— Takapuna. PHAR LAP ARRIVES SAFELY. VANCOUVER, Monday. An Agua Caliente message states that l’liar Lap arrived fit after h:s trip from San Francisco. His trainer, T. Woodcock, says he is in excellent condition and is resting well. The temperature at Agua Caliente ranges from 45 to /5, corresponding to the Australian spring and autumn.

TURF NOTES. Blake Duke, when he won the Summer Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, was having his 141st. stait. He has won thirty-four races, been second fourteen times and third-as often.

Niggerliead, who made a good attempt to lead all the way in the Melrose Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, was recently purchased from Mr. T. H. Lowry by Mr. A. Foster, of Oamaru, who owns the two-year-old Isadore. The Ricearton trainer, S. Barr, has charge of the pair. Niggerliead is a three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Silver Grey, an Australian-bred grey mare . by Grey Monk, a son of Koi Herod.

Ricearton lias had a great innings all over the Dominion since the holiday racing began. The good work was carried on at Trentham and the nominations for Dunedin strongly suggest further successes. The Christchurch entrants for Wingatui include:Cricket Bat, Ball Dress, Babel, Morepork, Rocket, Gay Crest, The Quorn, Compris, NightmaN'ch, St'atic, larqudnius, Royal Love, )Ranio, Sol wit, Shatter, Dunraven, Taragona, Jason’s Quest, Wise Choice, Martian Chief, Oratorious, Starshooter, Tautbow, Semper Paratus, Ranelagli, Hurlingbam, Royal Amphora, Segrave, Rational II and Silver Ring.

Three of the eight winners at Trcntliam on Saturday had never previously been successful, in a race. This trio were Babel, Gaine Carrington and Araunah. Gaine Carrington, the two-year-old half-brother by Hunting Song to Peter Jackson, was having only his second start. Left, his dam, is by Martian and is a sister to the New Zealand Cup winner Menelaus. The pedigree is most attractive, and his future will be Watched with interest. He was bred by the Messrs. Smith Brothers and E. 11. Thomas and is being raced by the Messrs. Smith. J. Fryer, of Hawera, has charge of the colt.

Babel is a four-year-old mare by The Act from Scrimmage, by Antagonist from Mad Whirl, a grand-daughter of Trenton. She did not race at two or three years, but has had half a' dozen starts this season. Her only placing prior to Saturday was a third at Manawatu on December 29.

Araunah is a three-year-old grey gelding by Hunting Song from Rcwanga, by Marble Arch from Tauhei, sister t<4 Canteen, by Castor from Vivandiere by Musket. Bred by Mr. F. Benson, of Gisborne, Araunah was purchased as a yearling by Messrs. D. 11. McLeod and €. 11. Slater, for whom 11. S. Greene is training him at Hastings. Araunah did not race last season, and his win was gained at his third start. A very high opinion is held about him.

It is unlikely that the great old galloper Amounis will race again.' Early last week the champion showed signs of soreness, and subsequently he was a little lame. On Saturday F. McGrath thought the horse appeared —to use the trainer’s word —a little “dotty,” and he forthwith decided that Amounis should have at least a spell lasting between six and 12 months in the long grass. Amounis has won £48,297 in stakes, and his trainer, and the owner, Mr. W. Pearson, were persevering with him with the hope that lie would top the £50,000 mark.
