AN AND CHINA

THREATENED ACTION CHINESE PREPARATIONS. Press Association E'ectric Telegraph—Copyright (Received Tuesday, 10.10 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Monday. Frantic preparations are being made by tlie Chinees authorities to withstand the threatened attack by the Japanese, and the forcible occupation of the Chinese areas around Shanghai. Soldiers are being rushed along the Shanghai-Nanking railway, and all strategic points are being reinforced in anticipation of an attempt to seize the railway and disrupt the communications with the capital. The Chinese military are barricading the native boundaries, digging trenches and erecting wire entanglements. Big supplies of munitions and anti-aircraft guns have been issued to commanders of the defence points of tho Woosung-Shanghai area. These war-like, preparations are alarming the Chinese residing outside the foreign concessions, and thousands of them are pouring into the settlement. AWAITING AN ANSWER. SHANGHAI, Monday. The Japanese Consul-General, Mr. Kmurai, paid a final call on the Chinese authorities this afternoon relative to the ultimatum, which does not contain a time limit. It was stated this morning that if a satisfactory reply were not given within a reasonable period, the Japanese proposed to take action. Developments in the Shanghai hinterland suggest that the Chinese are preparing to offer the stoutest possible resistance to an endeavour to take over the native districts.
