GRAVEST CONCERN.
OVER GERMANY’S PROPOSAL. (Received Saturday, 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, Friday. The Empire Dairy Council states that Germany’s proposal, to double the butter tariff, is causing gravest concern to (Empire dairymen, as butter rejected by Germany is sure to be diverted to the unsheltered British market. Mr. Davis, manager of the New Zealand Produce Board, expresses the opinion that the German tariff probably would cause 500,000 ewt. of foreign butter to be thrown into an already saturated British market during the coming year. Mr. Stapleton, the British Dairy Farmers’ Association representative, states that a tariff of three pence a lb. on foreign butter is urgently necessary if wo want to save the Empire dairy industry from ruin.
