Phar Lap will race here on February 21, in an international championship, for a stake of 10,000 dollars, against the Canadian champion, Dr. Freeland, and possibly Plucky Play, two of the best horses in the United States. Each also has been nominated for the Agua Caliente Handicap.
The weights are approximately 101 b. below the standard of handicap assignments fixed for an international event.
The assistant manager of the jockey club said that the 2 )rc> P osc< l match would be a 10,000-dollar purse, and have no effect on the Caliente Handicap, since special weights would ,be allotted the contenders, probably Sst. 3lb. and'the distanefr will be a mile and a quarter. : WELLINGTON RACES. CONCLUDING DAY. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting was concluded to-day in dull, windy weather. The track was hard and fast. There was. a moderate attendance. Results: —- WALLACEVILLE HIGIIWEIGHT. 3 Babel 1 •4 Counter Mazvh 2 5 Royal Limond 3 All started. Won by a head, with two lengths between second and third horses. Time, 1.40 1-5. KELBURN HANDICA P. 1 Retract 1 12 Foghorn - 10 Flower 3 All started. Won by a length, with f length between second and third horses. Time, 1.391. TURF NOTES. At 'the yearling sales held at Trentham racecourse on Thursday, W. R. Kemball was a liberal buyer. Ho secured eleven, while R. Mace, of Masterton, bought in two and one went to 11. Fahey, Taratahi.
