BELIEF WORKERS’ STRIKE
MAY SPREAD. If a resolution to be put before a meeting of Wellington relief workers on Tuesday evening next is passed, it may lead to the complete stoppage of •work on relief jobs; while an effort will be made “to make the fight a national one.’’
A deputation from the Lower Ilutt men, who were on strike on Thursday, demanding Standard rates of pay on the Eastbourne drainage works, waited upon the executive of the relief workers’ section of the General Labourers’ Union last evening, and placed the whole question of the Ilutt dispute before the executive.
There was an attendance of about 25 delegates, representing the' majority of the relief jobs in the city. The deputation from the Hutt received an attentive hearing, and after a long discussion the following resolution was carried unanimously:— “That a meeting of all relief workers in Wellington be called on Tuesday evening, such meeting to be advertised in the Press, with the following recommendation: —The complete cessation of work on relief jobs until standard wages are paid.’’ The rank and file will be asked to vote on this resolution at Tuesday evening’s meeting.
