SALARY CUTS
AMERICAN PROPOSALS. WASHINGTON, Tuesday. .Official circles Avere considerably startled Avhen Representative Wood, despite a general belief that President Hoover Avas opposed to reductions in Government pay rates, asserted in • the House of Representatives that Mr Hoover not only Avas not opposed to Federal salary .reductions, but Avould reduce Ms own salary if 1 employees Avould do likeAvise. Immediately a movement Avas launched to place legislation before Congress for salary cuts in every branch of the Government ser-A-ice.
Mr Wood stated, in answer to a question, that Mr Hoover’s private fortune Ai - as below £200,000 and had dAvindled considerably lately OAving to gifts to charity. Senator Borah presented a Bill to the Senate proposing cuts beginning at 6 per cent, on salaries above £IOOO and increasing up to 20 per cent, above £2OOO.
