FOR THE CHILDREN.
For a brief space the question of playing areas came under review at the Borough Council meetinglast night, when an application for a renewal of a lease of the area of land near the gasworks and earmarked for the purposes of a playing area was referred to. Over twelve months ago, in these columns, attention was draAvn to the need for a playing area for the children of the district in the vicinity of the Railway Station. The chairman of the Bark and Reserves Committee last night emphasised, and rightly so, the undesirability of the Council seeking ucav avenues for increasing the upkeep expenditure on reserves. While recognising the need of a play area in this part of the toAvn, the attitude, with decreasing revenue in various departments, is undoubtedly sound. However, it by no means prevents the citizens themselves from seeing that the aiea is dedicated to the children.. A committee founded on the lines of the South Park body might be the first move in this direction. It should not be a A ? ery difficult matter to raise sufficient funds to provide for the upkeep of the area for a year or t\\ T o at any rate. .It is understood that the Beautifying Society is in possession of a faiily substantial sum for the purposes of improving this land. The cooperation of the Beautifying Society would he essential to the success of any committee that may be formed. This is an opportunity for the exercise of a measure of self-help on the lines which culminated in the foundation of South Park.
