PARLIAMENT
FINANCIAL DEEATE. One more than half the number of members of the House of Representatives has now taken part in the Financial Debate, which was adjourned last evening for resumption next Tuesday. x\n unexpected indictment of long speeches, which failed to contribute anything of value to the debate, came from Mr W. W. Massey, Reform member for Hauraki, when he made his nuHjßfc speech towards the end of the dayrln the course of a speech in which he created a most favourable impression, Mr Massey said lie had reached the conclusion that many of the contributions to the debate could be curtailed with decided advantage to the country, and in spite of the general inclination towards the making of addresses that spin out to the very end of the allotted time, he found support from various quarters. y One of the most interesting statements of the day came from Mr A. E. dull, United member for Waipawa, who gave particulars of the amounts spent from the Prime Minister’s Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Fund. He showed that at the end of last month there was still a credit balance of £219,535, a total of £171,398 having been disbursed up to that date. • - A strong appeal for more economy in government was made by Mr W. P. ■Endean, Reform member for Parnell, who said that while the time was ripe for further savings, the opportunity to make them was also presented at the moment and that much could be done by e-iMfcig down Ministerial expenses. He also touched upon the question of the entry of the Matson liners into the 'Pacific passenger trade, making it more obvious than ever that the Government is to be pressed to take some action against what is stated to be unfair 'competition. The House rose at 5.30 p.in, until 2.30 •p.m. on Tuesday.
