A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN.

GLORIOUS TULIP DISPLAY. A VISIT TO "AIRLEE.” This morning a "Daily Times'” representative visited the garden of Mrs Johnstone, "Airlee,” Upper Plain, and was rewarded by seeing nature in one of her most entrancing moods. The glorious display of tulips is the outstanding feature of this l beautiful garden at the present time and one does not feel like hastening the time of departure. Long rows of cup-shaped flowers in a variety of hues nod gracefully on the ends of long supple, yet delicate, stems. The colour combination is remarkable and enhances the delight of the visitor. Scarlets, crimsons, pinks, reds, rose and orange vie with each other for recognition of their beauty. It is no wonder that these flowers are such favourites and finding greater prominence in the gardens of New Zealand. Amongst the tulips at "Airlee” are to be seen one or two lovely specimens of the water tulips with their deep scalloped edges. Mrs Johnstone’s collection also contains the parrot variety' of tulip but not yet in bloom. This is a late flowering group and the flowers are mostly heavy and drooping with brightly coloured petals, the edges being curiously notched and waved. These should be in bloom by the end of the week. Mrs Johnston kindly consented to opening her garden to the public and over two hundred people visited yesterday. It will bo open all this week and over next Sunday. Through the' kindness of Mrs Johnston the time lias been extended from that which had been set dov r n. A collection box has been conveniently placed so that visitors may subscribe to the funds of the Beautifying Society which has done so much to make the environs of this town beautiful. Mrs Johnstone and the Beautifying Society deserve the thanks of the community for the opportunity to view such a magnificent display of tulips. There is much to interest the visitor to this garden. A beautiful peony, which a prominent Wellington horticulturist said was the finest he had seen, occupies a prominent place in the garden and was much admired by visitors yesterday. "Airlee” is only about two miles from town and citizens should take the opportunity to visit. Mrs Johnstone’s garden which so generously has been thrown open for all to see the splendid tulip display.
