SINGAPORE BASE.
WORK TO CONTINUE. OFFICIAL REASON. (Received Saturday, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, Friday. It is learned that the British Government’s decision to proceed with the Singapore base according to contract is due to the fact that suspension would actually cost more than completing, and be embarrassing; particularly to the Dominions, who are relatively liable to lose more of their contributions than Britain. It will be recalled that New Zealand and Malaya' each contributed £1,000,000, while Australia is not contributing a lump sum. She is virtually providing for a greater contribution by the upkeep of a modern fleet.
