The trial of Fernando de Rosa, on a charge of attempting to kill Prince Umberto, heir to the Italian Throne, during his visit to Brussels in December last, developed, into a trial of Fascism, in which distinguished Italians gave evidence. The country under Mussolini’s rule, Signor Nitti said, showed a loss of liberty, leading to Italy’s eocnomic decadence, as well as a decline in the intellectual level. He praised the character of accused, and referred to young Italians of different parties executed under the Fascist regime.
Ex-Deputy Turati said that de Rosa sought to draw the attention of public opinion abroad to Italy’s misfortunes, and awaken a spirit of resistance in Italy.
Signor Ferrari, an exiled lawyer, declared that the King of Italy had become the Chancellor of the Dictator. A sensation was caused in Court when Signor Rosetti, an Italian wartime hero, said the present position in Italy was like that in Belgium during the German occupation. He himself left Italy because he was haunted with a desire to commit a patriotic crime. The case was adjourned.
