MASTERTON HARRIERS.
INVITATION RACE. Forty-two harriers made the tip to East Taratahl on Saturday afternoon, at the kind invitation of Mr F. M. Reynolds. The race was an open handicap event OA’er a 61-mile two-lap course, laid by J. Kitchener and W. Pointon. Conditions Avere excellent, and some - fast times were recorded.
The results are as follow: —L. Rutherford (hep. 60sec.), time, 39.45, 1; J. Mulvey (3min.), 40.10, 2; J. Carter (3.30), 41.11, 3; L. Hack (scr.), 39.32, 4; C. Ross (2.50), 5; G. Kempton (3.30), 6. The fastest time was recorded by L. Hack, who completed the 6i miles in 39.32; second fastest time, L. Rutherford, and third fastest time, S. Carr, f 41.5.
After the race,- members and supporters were entertained at afternoon tea, followed by some enjoyable items by Misses Joy de Lisle and E. Finlayson, and Mr T. Vaughan. Some lively glees were sung by the harriers, who had by then regained their wind. Mr Carr (club captain) asked Mr Reynolds to present the prizes, and when this had been done, he extended, on, behalf of the club, warm thanks to the hosts for their splendid hospitality. “I can promise you,’’ remarked Mr Carr, “that the club lias brightened up considerably this year, and I feel sure that there is every chance of regaining, the Shield.
Mr Kitchener, in a neat speech, heartily endorsed Mr Carr’s. remarks. Mr F. Petersen (social secretary) had a few words to say regarding the social side of the club. “And,’’ said Mr Petersen, “I expect to see you all, and all your friends, at our ball on Wednesday next. ’ ’
“Auld Lang Svne’’ concluded a most enjoyable afternoon.
