YOUTHS ARRESTED.

ARMED WITH AUTOMATIC. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHUR CII, Tuesday. Found last night on the premises of a residence in Papanui road with a loaded automatic pistol, a sandbag, and with tlicir shoes off, two youths who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., were remanded to appear next Tuesday, and the Magistrate fixed heavy bail. James Lindland Anderson, aged IS, and Maurice Hamilton Gregory, aged 17, were charged with being idle and disorderly persons, in that they were found by night without lawful excuse in the enclosed garden of a houso at 100 Papanui road. Mr W. J. Stacey appeared for Gregory, and Mr 11. S. J. Goodman for Anderson.

Senior-Sergeant Shanahan asked for a remand.

Mr Stacey asked for bail for Gregory, who, he said, came of a good family and had a good record. “I oppose bail,” said the senior-ser-geant. "Our records don’t agree that one of the boys is as white as he is painted. ’ ’ Mr Goodman asked for bail for Anderson, who he said had a good record.

“These two had their shoes off,” said the senior-sergeant, “and Anderson had an electric torch. Gregory had an automatic pistol with one live cartridge in it, a sandbag, and a motor car tyre lever. They had pieces of black cloth that might have been used as masks. There is evidence also that might connect them with other offences.” “Concerning temporary suppression of the name ” began Mr Goodman. “I’d rather you didn’t ask. I would only have to refuse you,” said the Magistrate.

Mr Stacey 3aid that the Magistrate had discretionary power to take the cases in the Children’s Court. If bail were allowed it would enable counsel to get the true facts of the case.

The Magistrate said that he would take the case in the Magistrate’s Court. Accused would be remanded until next Tuesday. Bail would be allowed in each case in self £SOO and a surety of £SOO, and both accused would report twice daily to the police.
