VALEDICTORY.
MR AND MRS D. N. EDWARDS. Mr and Mrs D. N. Edwards were farewelled by the executive of the Masterton Competitions Society at a social gathering in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening. The function was most enjoyable and was r. decided success, the large attendance testifying to the popularity of Mr and Mrs Edwards.
Prior to the supper adjournment, the Mayor (Mr T. Jordan), on behalf of tho Competitions Society, presented Mr Edwards with a handsome silver tea set, suitably engraved. In making the presentation, Mr Jordan said it was not a night for jollity, as they were losing two good citizens and good citizens were all too few in most communities. After speaking of the excellent work performed by Mr Edwards in connection with the competitions Society over a lengthy period, Mr Jordan presented Mrs Edwards with a beautiful silver coffee jug on behalf of the ladies’ committee, and praised her invaluable services as a member of that committee.
Mr Edwards briefly replied and thanked tho society for their handsome presents. His work in the interests of the society, he said, had been purely a labour of love. Mr Edwards thanked Mr Jordan for his kind remarks and said he would always have a soft spot for Masterton and the Competitions Society. Mrs Edwards also suitably replied. Mr H.’ Miller, a member -of the executive of the Wellington Competitions Society 5 and Mr E. Bell, secretary of the Masterton Society, also spoke, eulogising tho work of Mr and Mrs Edwards.
Musical items were rendered by Mrs Goodin, Misses N. McLennan, D. Feast, E. Jenkins, L, Johnston, Joy de Lisle, C. Bcrrill, Mr and Miss Jones, and Master W. Lawrence. Dance music was supplied by Mrs W. G. Perry and Mrs E. J. Coleman played extras.
