The following bulletin was issued on Friday: “Despite some progress during the past hours, the Princess Royal’s condition has not yet reached a stage which removes all anxiety.” Mr W. Buiek, of Mastcrton, left today on a short visit to Hastings.

The death occurred at Hawcra last week of Mr Samuel Griffin, at the age of 97 years.

The Hon. P. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, will be a visitor to the Mastcrton races next Saturday.

A Christchurch Press message announces the death of Lady Rhodes, wife of Sir Heaton Rhodes, after a short illness.

The engagement is announced of Miss Ellinor Margaret Bonde, only daughter of Mr and Mrs C, Bonde, Cole Styeet, Mastcrton to Mr Jack Lansdale Judd, younger son of Mr and Mrs Alfred. Judd, “The Lakes,” Rotorua. „ /■

The Prime Minister (Rt. lion. Sir Joseph Ward) is now up and about again after liis recent indisposition, and intends to resume his place in the House of Representatives to-morrow afternoon. Yesterday Sir Joseph Ward took advantage of the fine weather for a two hours’ motor tour.

Mrs Sophia Emily Harris, wife of Mr Arthur A. Harris, of Matarawa, died yesterday after a brief . illness. The late Mrs Harris, who was 52 years of age, was born at the Upper Plain, Mastcrton. She leaves a widower and a family of four sons and two daughters.

A quiet wedding took place on Thursday last in St. Matthew’s Chapel, the contracting parties being Miss Erica Chalmers, only daughter of Mr and Mrs F. E. Chalmers, Fernyhurst, Mastcrton, and Mr John Broad, son of Mrs C. L. Broad, of Wanganui. The Rev. W. Bullock was the officiating minister.

The death took place at Carterton on Saturday morning, of Airs Alary Anne Sparks, widow of the late Air Thomas Sparks, a pioneer settler of the Wairarapa. The late Airs Sparks, who was SO years of age, came to the Dominion 72 years ago. Her husband predeceased her in 1915, and a family of two sons and a daughter are left. At the Methodist Church yesterday before a very large congregation, a. memorial tablet to the late Air L. Donald was unveiled by Messrs Wells (secretary of the Trust) and Air Bate (superintendent of the Sunday school). Prior to the unveiling, the Rev. E. O. Blamires made reference in a suitable address to the splendid service deceased had rendered in the interests of the church over a long period of years, and of his devotion in advancing the work of the church at every opportunity. The funeral of the late Air L. J. Davis took place yesterday afternoon. The big attendance of friends and sympathisers, and the large number of floral tributes, testified to the esteem in which deceased was held by all those who knew and associated with him. The pall-bearers were Messrs F. and S. Smith, F. Stains, C. Pickering, J. Steel, W. Edwards, representative of his late employers, the Druids’ Lodge, of which deceased was a member, and the Returned Soldiers’ Associations The Rev. E. AlcLevie officiated at the graveside, and the Druids’ Lodge service was read by Air C. Pickering.

A London cable message announces the death of the Earl of Meath, aged 88. The Earl of Meath was famous as tho founder of that movement for thinking imperially which resulted in May 21 the birthday of Queen Victoria, being kept as Empire Day. The suggestion that this day should be devoted to this purpose he first made to Mr Chamberlain when the latter was Colonial Secretary in 1902. Lord Meath was also closely identified with many religious and social movements, including Boy Scouts and the Church Army.

Last tj;eek a pleasant function took place in the Geraldine County Council Chambers when members of the Council, with some friends, met for the purpose of congratulating the County Engineer, Mr C. E. Bremner and Mrs Bremner on the golden anniversary of their wedding. In addition to the members of the Council there were present: Messrs J. Kennedy (Mayor of Geraldine), T. Gunnion (Mayor of Temuka), C. L. Fraser (Manager of Bank of N.Z., Temuka) and other prominent persons. Mr K. Mackenzie, chairman of the County Council, who presided, said it was felt that they could not let pass unnoticed such an occasion and wished to convey to- Mr and Mrs Bremner a tangible appreciation of their worth. They knew Mr Bremner not only as their engineer but. had learned to know him as a friend, whom they respected and honoured. Mrs Bremner was kindly remembered fo rher unfailing: kindness and hospitality. Mr MacKenzie then asked Mr Bremner to accept a handsome hall clock, with Westminster chimes, and said he hoped the chimes would remind him and Mrs Bremner of the wedding bells of fifty years ago. The health of the couple was then musically honoured. Mr Bremner feelingly replied. Messages of congratulation were received from friends in Masterton, where Mr and Mrs Bremner are well and favourably known, Mr Bremner at one time being engineer for the Masterton County Council. '
