Y.M.C.A.
MOTHER AND SON BANQUET. The Mayoress, Mrs T. Jordan, presided at the annual Mother and Son Tea, which was. held in the Y.M.C.A. yesterday. There wa3 a large attendance, about 160 persons being present, and the gathering proved a very happy one. A good, programme of musical, and elocutionary items was rendered, and was thoroughly appreciated by all. Mr .7. H. Haiulyside, president of the Y.M.C.A., spoke a few words of welcome, after which the tea commenced. Items were rendered by the following:—Recitation, Master lan Coleman; solo, Mrs, J. V. Garvitcli; solo, Mr T. Mc'Caffery; < recitation, Mrs S. Smith; songs, Masters C'. Churchill, W. Donghi, I\. Wright, and O. and D. Vibert; solo, Mrs F. Shearer. Mrs E. J. Coleman was accompanist. The toasrt of “Mother'-’ was proposed by Master Donald Milne. “ A boy has no better friend than his mother,” he said. “The fact that our mothers are here with us to-night shows us that. It shows that they are interested in what we are interested in. We are proud to have them here and show them off to others, for every one of us here thinks his own mother is the best of the lot.”
Mrs E. W. Weymouth, on behalf of the mothers, responded and thanked the boys who honoured them, and expiessed the hope that all the boys would grow up to be noble and good citizens.
Mrs T. lb Barrel - addressed the boys and told them the story of the Garfield family and of the rise to fame of James Garfield. “Here mother's faith and tinst in her son was justified,'' said Mrs Barrel - .
Mrs A. Cameron, president of the YM.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary, offered cordial thanks'* to the Mayoress and the speakers. During the tea gramophone music was dispensed by' Master Jack MacKay. The gramophone and records were kindly - lent by the Arts and Crafts. A vote of thanks was accorded to those who contributed items.
BILLIARD CUP. DRAW FOR FIRST ROUND. The General Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. announces that the games for the Y.M.C.A. Billiard and Siiooker Cup are to commence to-morrow evening in the Association's rooms. Six teams have entered for the competition this year, and the draw for the first round has resulted as follows. — May 24.—W.F.C.A. plays Druids. June 7. —Fire Brigade plays Railways. June I f. —Y.M. b.\. plays Oddfellows. Play r is to commence at 7 p.m. sharp and members of teams are urged to be on time.
