All started. Won by 1; lengths, with Le Choucas half a length away. Time, 4.:is. TURF TOPICS. Another son of Carbine is reaching the end of his days in Australia. Pistol has finished his career as a sire, and he has become so feeble that it is unlikely ho will live much longer. Although he did not establish a lino of big winners, like Valais or Comedy King, Pistol vied with The Welkin as the most prolific stallion Australia has ever known. Certainly nothing has approached him in South Australia, and he has proved most versatile, as his stock could sprint, go a distance, and jump like stags. For pure hardiness they stood out alone. If Pistol sees out New Year’s Day he will be 20 years old, and it would be difficult to find a sire that, at his patriarchal age, had headed the winning stallion list, as was the. ease in South South Australia last year with Pistol. He was imported to' Adelaide in 1904 to take, the place at Richmond Park of Cnrlyon, and from 1007 his progeny has won something in the region of £250,000, with approximately 725 winners of 1600 races. Although Martian wins undoubtedly one of tire greatest sires the world has ever known, he does not seem to have bequeathed his prowess in that direction to any of his sons. Some of them have sired winners, but no one so far has got anything really high class. This is somewhat strange, • because many of them were very shapely in conformation and bred on attractive lines in tail female. They were successful on the turf, but have strengthened only the rank-and-file performers’ list. On the other hand, Martian mares, and also those got by his halfbrother Boniform, are doing well at the stud. The Martian male line is now represented in Australia by Reputation, for whom Xoseitur has won several races round Melbourne lately. Reputation was a really good performer in his day, and came from

the successful Steppe tap-root, to which we owe Stepniak and Bobadil, who were successful both on the turf and at the stud. Nevertheless winners by Reputation are few and far between, and, in common with other sons of Martian, he has got nothing half as good as himself as a racehorse. The scratehings for the Derby at Auckland yesterday were Ark Royal, Don Jose, Paganelli, Singleton, and Golden Wedding, leaving a field of eight. Agrion was a red-hot favourite, carrying £6OOO, as against £I9OO odd on the, second favourite, Great Charter, who had a slight call on Laughing Prince. The others other Ricearton pair, Satrap and Martarma. were next, both at good prices. Great Charter made all the running from Agrion, with Cimabue and Laughing Prince next, the field being closely l bunched, Satrap whipping in. Down the back they strung out a bit, but approaching tho half Satrap and Martarma moved forward and were with Agrion and Laughing Prince behind Great_£harter as they were running for the straight. Agrion got to Great Charter once they were, in line, and Martarma and Laughing Prince then began to worry him. Barry drew his whip a furlong from home, but Agrion was a beaten colt and was passed by both Martarma and Laughing Prince. The latter looked dangerous for a moment, but, shaken up, Martarma drew away from him and won by a length, Agrion being the best part of two lengths further back. Great Charter was fourth, followed by Cimabue, In the Shade, Satrap and Thaw. Rapier was the non-starter in the Racing Club Handicap at Auckland yesterday. Star Stranger was -always favourite, and next in order of the betting were Pcgaway, Mask, and Battlement. . Papatu, Cohesion. Scat and Bcnnanee were in the van early, with Mandane well up. The latter weut back passing the six furlong post. Count Cavour, Star Stranger, and Pegaway becoming more prominent. Scat, Papatu, and Bcnnanee were still at tho head of affairs turning for home, and then Star Stranger joined the leaders entering the straight, and lie outstayed the field to win comfortably. Papatu was always handy, but Star Stranger. had his measure in the straight. Bcnnanee, as at Riccarton, just failed to stay it right out after looking a royal prospect as they turned for home. He pulled up well. Battlement stayed on well into fourth place from a long way back; he earned T. Green at the cost of 51b. overweight. Pcgaway and Eden Hall ran fair races, but were not good enough. Count Cavour might have been hard to beat, for he was going particularly well at the time of his mishap, and was running alongside Star Stranger, with the latter on the outer. Mask was in trouble early, and again in the mix-up with Count Cavour. His backers got a poor run, but he finished on. ) k i

The Canterbury Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trots yesterday was an excellent race, though Talaro and Black Admiral were disappointing. Acron again failed to strike his gait until his chance was extinguished, while Talent broke immediately the race started. Down the straight in the first round IRoieole led from Golden Devon and Trenand, and down the back Logan Park moved up quickly, into third position, but broke and lost ground, which he recovered -quickly. Golden Devon, Logan Park and Roicole were in the van in the straight the second time, but before the bend was reached Logan Park took charge from Golden Devon and Trampfast, with Dalnahine fourth. Down the back Black Admiral and Queen’s Own improved their positions. Entering the straight the field had closed up on Logan Park, but the latter withstood challenges from Trampfast and Queen’s Own and won with little to spare. Dalnahine was fourth.

Episode was a warm favourite for the two-vear-old handicap at Auckland yesterday, The Begum, Pari, and Moehau being solidly . backed. Cantonion got left, The Begum showing out from Episode, attended by High Falutin’, Sir Russell, and Shot Silk. The Begum led into the straight and was ,then tackled by Episode. Morris was shaking up the favourite a furlong from home, but. in the finish she was doing her work well and won going away by a length. The pair had drawn clear of the others, High Falutin’ being three lengths back. Shot Silk was fourth and then came Winnington, Pari, and Prodice. The. saddle on The Begum slipped up on her withers in the finish, and the jockey had to dismount after passing the post. It may. have affected her chances, but it is net likely. High Falutin’, from the Fordell stable, ran a good race, and so did 'Winnington, a half-sister to Rafa, trained by J. T. Jamieson. Shot Silk had every chance. Pari and I’rodicq were only fair.
