With Pouri out of the Tiritea Hurdles at the Manawatu meeting yesterday, backers went for Mister Gamp, and he started a substantial favourite, lElysianor, Hymgreat, and Red Fuchsia being evenly back'ed. Hymgreat and Elysianor made the running for a round from Red Fuchsia, Kilburn, Revel, Blue Peter, and Mister G’amp. About five furlongs from home Red Fuchsia went to the front; he was attended at the last fence by Hymgreat, Llvsiauor, and Kilburn, but once over he came away to win by two lengths from Hymgreat, who was a short head in front of Kilburn. Elysianor was a couplt f of lengths further back fourth, and then came Blue Peter clear of Revel and Mister Gamp, Comedy Prince was a bad last. The winner jumped well, and was always going as if success was likely. A good deal of use was made of Hymgreat, and he ran a creditable rac-e. Kilburn and Elysianor failed to jump well throughout, but both ran good races. Mister Gamp nearly-fell on the run into the straight the last time. Five scratchings left a field of seven for the Liverpool Handicap at the Manawatu meeting yesterday. Civility, Lady Limond, and Damaris were all solidly backed, with good support for Oratrix. Lady Limond was ridden out to the front, and she led from Waicullus. Damaris, and Civility, with Gaze, Oratrix, and Ardfinnan bringing up the rear. Down the back the order was the same; at the five furlongs Lady Limond led Damaris, Civility, Waicullus, and Oratrix. The order was the same on the turn, where Civility dropped out. Lady Limond moving for the judge attended by Damaris, Waieullus, and Oratrix. Lady Limond was tackled at the last furlong post, but she gamely shook off Damaris and "Waieullus and was then challenged by Oratrix. In a battling finish Oratrix wore her down

and won by a short head. Damaris was a length back third, Waieullus a good fourth, and then came Gaze and Ardfinnan, with Civility tailed off. Stormy was a warm favourite for the Clandcboy Handicap at the Alanawatu meeting yesterday, Polar being much better backed than any of the others. There was a good deal of bumping going out of the straight, and when settled down Polar led from Stormy, Alyson and Huikai. Down the back Polar and Iluikai led from Alarch On, Alyson, apd Stormy, with Black Alint and Xovar moving up. Stormy and Assurance became prominent at the half " behind Polar and Iluikai, Black Alint heading the bunch. Anolo led into the straight, from Stormy, Assurance, Huikai, and Black Mint. Stormy led Polar, and then was challenged over the last furlong by Assurance. The two Riccarton representatives battled out a desperate finish. Stormy getting home'by a head. Polar was a length away third, with Huikai next, then Alyson and Black Alint. Stormy won like a good horse, and was excel-* lently handled by Ellis. Assurance ran a great race, but struck a snag in the winner. Polar ran well, and so did Huikai. Black Alint ran a useful race. Rapier registered a high-class performance in winning the Auckland Cup, in which he established record time. He carried only a light weight when he 'scored in the New Zealand Cup, early last month, but as a result of that success the Auckland handicapper raised him to S.lO, placing him close up to the 'best horses in the Dominion. That he again defeated them was a real tribute to his racing qualities, and he is entitled to rank now as a high-class horse. His trainer, 11. Nurse, is entitled to full credit for the' improved form of Rapier. lie Jias always claimed that the Greyspear horse would develop weight-for-age form over a distance, and his Auckland Cup success shows that- that estimate is not far from accurate. It was a strong field that he beat over two miles on Monday. Courageous was a firm favourite for the Apprentices’ Handicap at the Afanawatu meeting yesterday, Barryanda being much- better backed than Tone. Cloyne, Lin Arlington, Reckless, Discourse, Borsalene, and Dainty Ways were most prominent early, with Courageous tailing right off. At the halfmile Cloyne had charge, with Dainty Ways, from Reckless, Lin Arlington, Discourse, Borsalene, Alisa Pat, and Barryanda. They were in close order as they turned for home, where Aliss Pat shot ahead, and sticking on won by half a length from Lin Arlington, with Barryanda a head away, and Discourse right up. Courageous, Dainty Ways, and Tone were next. Aliss Pat was not well placed early, but she finished very solidly. Lin Arlington was always going well, and there was nothing in it for second money. Barryanda came from the rear. Dainty Ways ran a fair race, but failed to soc it out. Courageous was in an impossible position early, but finished well. Tone was A>nly fair. Discourse (bracketed with the winner) carried T. Green at the cost of a 101 b. penalty, and showed considerable promise. She is a three-* vcar-old by Gasbag from Ladify.
