First he tried to strangle himself with a knotted handkerchief, and when intercepted by the guard lie tried to dive from his bunk to dash iiis head on the concrete floor. He had been in a state of lethargy for many hours previously. When arousing he tore a Bible to pieces, scattered tlie pages on tlie floor, and then attempted to commit suicide. Tuesday. A message from Los Angeles says that Hickman was safely lodged in gaol here despite widespread fears of mob violence. Public anger lias again been roused to a fever pitch by the publication of the ’details of his confession of the murder, which are particularly brutal. Hickman is cringing, and appears to be on tlie verge of a collapse.
