DISHONEST CASHIER.

PLACED ON PROBATION. Alexander Scott, a. cashier, aged 21, pleaded guilty before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday to stealing various sums of money totalling £SO. the property of the New Zealand Express Company. Chief-Detective Ward stated that accused had called in at the Police Station on Thursday night and given himself up. He had taken the money in various sums from September 1, while employed as a cashier with the firm. When Scott surrendered himself he had £8 18s 9d in his possession, and this amount he handed over to the detectives. Mr A. J. Mazengarb, who represented accused, asked for leniency. As Scotthad never previously been before the Court, he submitted that probation might be granted. ■Mr T. P. Mills (Probation Officer) suggested that accused be given -a chance and placed on probation for three years. The Magistrate said that under ordinary circumstances probation would be out of the question as theft ns a servant was a serious offence. In view of Mr Mills’ recommendation, however, he would place Scott on probation'for three years, a condition being that he made restitution of the money stolen. An application for the suppression bf accused’s name was refused.
