DRUNKEN MOTORISTS.

FINED £25. For being found in charge of a motor-car while ill a state of intoxication on Thursday evening, William Alex Garden, a land salesman, aged ;;7, was fined £25 and had his license suspended until March .'ll, 1925, by .Messrs. D. 11. lEdgar and J. E. Staples, J.P.•'s in the Wellington .Magistrate's Court yesterday. Sub-Inspector Lander stated that accused had been seen to leave a motor-car in Courtenay Place shortly after's o’clock and walk across the road unsteadily to a hotel. The police were communicated with, and when some time later Garden entered his ear he was arrested in an intoxicated condition. Mr A. .1. Mazengarb stated that although his client had pleaded guilty he had not been really driving the car. Another land salesman employed by the same firm always drove, and Garden was merely waiting for his friend to return. Accused had been having a few drinks on account of it being Christmas time, but knowing his condition he had no intention of driving the car. Under the circumstances counsel asked that his client’s license not be cancelled.
