December 31, Jan. 2—Hawke 's Bay J.C. December 26, 27—Taranaki. December 31, January 2 —Hawke’s Bay TURF TOPICS. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club, following tho example of the Auckland and Otahuhu clubs, lias decided not to allow its summer meeting to be broadcasted. The three-year-old Satrap has been paid, up for in the Queen’s Plate and the Auckland Cup, to be run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. While no definite statement has been made as to his mission, it seems probable that Satrap will join his mate, Count Cavour, in the Cup field. Count Cavour will bo making his third successive attempt to win the Auckland Clip on Boxing Day. Two years ago he carried 8.13, and was beaten by a short head by Rapine. Last year he carried 9.5, and again ran second, Tanadccs winning. His consistency has earned -something better than place money. In any ease, he can be relied on to race well on Mondav.

Rapier was ridden out at Ellerslie yesterday. There is an impression that he is sluggish on the track, but his hitherto sanguine admirers are wavering a little after seeing Papatu defeat him so decisively. His staying ability may enable him to turn the tables on the day.

At Ellerslie yesterday Count Cavour ran right away from Footfall at the end of a mile and a quarter in 2min. 16 l-ssec., the last round in 2min. 1 2-5 see. The Count finished up in. the most determined style, and appears to be at his very best. Footfall was well beaten a long way from the finishing post.

R. Emerson will not make the trip north with Assurance and Hoylake. F. D. Jones will have them under his supervision during the trip to the Manawatu and Marton meetings. The two horses will leave for the north tonight and they should race well, as thev are in the best of health.

In a gallop at Ellerslie yesterday Gascony started about two lengths behind Lysander and »Silvermine and beat them comfortably over five furlongs in lmin 4 4-ssee. He went splendidly, and will be one of the favourites for the Railway Handicap. It is worth mentioning that he went round the other pair and was very wide out at the turn. No rider has yet been secured for him, but it is possible that E. Ludlow will get the mount.

In the event of Tc Kara fulfilling his engagement in the Auckland Cup next Monday—and everything points that way —the veteran son of General Latour will have the record of contesting the Ellerslie race on four occasions. Under 7.6 in the race of 1923, he ran a dead-heat with Muraahi (7.4), and in the succeeding year he scored a victory under 5.4. He did not fulfil his engagement in the Auckland Cup of 1925. In the race last year he finished in fourth place under 9.0. Te Kara was foaled in 1918, so that he is now in his ninth year. The veteran is, however, reported to be carrying himself well.
