BOXING.

COOK BEATEN. LONDON, Wednesday. The "Morning Post’s” Romo correspondent says the fight between George Cook (Australia) and De Carolis .(champion of Rome) was the feature of the international programme at one of the greatest displays of boxing ever seen in Rome. The verdict that Carolis was the winner on points was loudly contested by the public whose opinion is now endorsed by the Press which affirms that a draw was justified. Carolis, who while training admitted respect for his experienced opponent, opened cautiously, but suddenly started in the third round forcing the fight? Hie Australian, who was undoubtedly surprised, retaliated with vigour, the contest developing into a battle royal. Cook was twice warned for butting while Carolis was frequently in distress owing to Cook’s methods and clinches. Despite the verdict the men finished all square after a memorable fight such as cannot be seen in countries with inflated purses and allied business interest. CRIQUI VANQUISHED. PARIS, Wednesday. In a twelve-rounds contest, Eugene Criqui, ex-featherweight champion of the world, fought Gustave Ilummery, aged 19, for the featherweight championship of France and gave up in the sixth round. The light was short and exciting. The ex-champion attempted his famous uppercut. Hummery, however, brimming over with energy of youth, forced the fighting and overwhelmed his opponent. Only Criqui’s skill, courage and ring tactics enabled him to last to the sixtu round when lie raised his hand indicating that he was beaten.
