BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Alastcrton 'Borough Council was held hist e\oning, the Alayor (Mr T. Jordan; presiding. The gas manager (Mr J. Leari,.ontli) reported that the gas manufactured for November showed a decrease of 0,2 per cent on November, 11*26, and the gas sold per meter increased .42 per cent. The bunkers were emptied during tho month, when it was found that the stocks of c-oal were 400 tons short. The tar distilling plant was giving fairly good results, and in future hot tar’could be supplied, at short notice. The old gas holders are being dismantled. It was decided to sot up a committee to bring down a report on steps to be taken to repair the old portion of the Alunicipal Buildings, which is in a state of decay. An application was received from the Wairarapa Cricket Association for a reduction of the rent tor the use of the Park Oval. It was decided to reduce the cost of the practice wickets for the season to £-'!, and that £2 l.>e charged for the Oval for representative matches. The gas manager reported that 20 chains of -1-ineh pipes would be arriving in about two weeks’ time, with which to renew the main in Walton’s Avenue. The Borough Engineer (Air C. I*.. Alabson) reported on works done during November as follows: —Water and Drainage.—During the month ncw connection and five VC rc put in. Repaired ~. roync at intake and cut S 1 * 0 " and swept out race twice. The river has been cutting in a great deal at the tip lately, and willow protection work will have to be put in right away to stop further erosion. Streets. Alaintcnanee work has been carried out in Pown.aH, Short, York, Kcnall, Villa, Albert, Grey, Olive, Columba, Church, Dixon and Herbert streets, Akura, Xgaumatawa and Railway roads, and First, Second and Third streets and Roberts road, in Lansdowne. Dixon street, has been completed, the whole length from Church to McKenna streets having been tar-sealed. Essex street has ben metalled and consolidated from Chapel to Pownall streets, and tar-seal-ed half-way when the weather intervened. Paths in Hessey, Aliriam, Archer and Elizabeth streets have been tarred and sanded. The mowing of street flanks is proceeding as rapidly as possible.
