Ark Royal was scratched for the Auckland Cup at 4.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The Auckland Cup will arouse an unusual amount of South Island interest this year. Eiecarton stables are represented by Count Cavour, Footfall, Rapier and Satrap, in addition to whom Battlement and Ark Royal will race for Otago owners. Ilka, who successfully carried Mr J. A. Taylor’s colours in New Zealand, and since her sale has won nine races on the pony tracks in Sydney, is to be retired to the stud. Highflown is re-handicapped to 10.4 by Mr W. P. Bussell in the Ohura Hurdles at the Stratford Racing Club’s meeting. Highflown has been re-handi-capped by Mr Coyle to 10.5 for the Eahotu Hurdle Handicap at the Taranaki Christmas meeting. Acceptances for the first of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting on December 31 and January 2 will close on Wednesday at 8 p.m. The telegraph office at Featherston closes at 5 p.m. E. Garrett will have the mount on Sir Roseberry in whatever hurdle events the Merry Moment gelding contests at the approaching Auckland meeting. Sir Roseberry has not been noticed doing any schooling during the short period that he has been in commission. Count Cavour will be making his third successive attempt to win the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day. Two years ago he carried 8.13, and was beaten by a short head by Rapine. Last vear he carried 9.5, and again ran second, Tanadees winning. Count Cavour is a 6-year-old, and of the older horses in the Auckland Cup he should prove the best. R. Emerson will do Manawatu and Marton with three horses, who arc very well. Assurance has not reached his best form yet but lie should soon be a winner. Hoylako has raced well on more than one occasion lately and he will do still better. The third member of the team, Lady Swinton, has not much form to recommend her but she may pay her way in minor events later on.
