FREEZERS HOLD-UP.

TROUBLE AT NAPIER. WATERSIDEES REFUSE WORK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, Tuesday. The loading of frozen meat on to lighters at Port Aliuriri will be commenced at eight o’clock to-morrow by free labour. This will solve the problem with which the meat companies were confronted when it became evident that members of the Watersiders’ Union would not handle meat from the works where slaughtering was being done with free labour. The Port Hobart completed her loading of wool yesterday, and was then ready to take refrigerated cargo. Tho first call for labour for this purpose Was made yesterday afternoon, without response from the unionists. To-day, two further calls were made, in tliQ morning and afternoon, and in each case the watersiders did not put in an appearance. No meat was railed from any of the works to-day, but it will come through early to-morrow morning.

LOADING AT NAPIER. BY FREE LABOUR. NAPIER, This Day. The mutton killed by free labour is being loaded to the Port Hobart by more free labour. . All is quiet and no trouble is feared. NO UNION SLAUGHTERMEN. WAIROA, This Day. The Wairoa Meat Company’s works opened this morning. No Union slaughtermen applied for work, and the board is manned with free labour. Ample labour is! offering, and the company has a substantial waiting list of those wanting to come on as soon as supplies of stock are more plentiful. The season opened a fortnight earlier than last year. This' will allow the men to become proficient before the heavy rush of stock. A number of Unionists applied for work in other departments, but little labour is required ,at present, other than the company’s regular staff. NO CHANGE AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. There was no change yesterday in the position of the slaughtermen’s dispute in Auckland. A call is being made to-day for labour to operate export stock by both the Westfield and Farmers’ Freezing Companies, and this should shape the issue definitely. In the meanwhile, negotiations are proceeding for a conference between the parties at. Wellington to-morrow, When it is hoped that a basis for agreement will bo reached OPENING IN CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH. November 30. Tho inclement weather of the past few days will have a detrimental effect on tho stock, and may cause a slight delay in the opening of the Canterbury Freezing 'Works this week. Large supplies of coal are being railed to the various works from the West Coast. WAINGAWA WORKS. SATISFACTORY PROGRESS. There is ample labour offering for the Waingawa Works, and killing operations arc proceeding satisfactorily.
