FIRE IN MASTERTON.

BIXOW ST. HOUSE GUTTED. GOOD WORK BY BRIGADE. Shortly after midnight last night the Alasterton Fire Brigade was called to a residence in Dixon street, near the Park, owned by flie Hare Estate, and occupied by Air. L. Greenbank. The Brigade was soon on the seene and found the house a mass of flames, with tiie residence of Air. J. Butcher, next door, in danger. Two leads of hose from one from Cricket street and Another from Brace stree, a total of 1200 feet,, provided plenty of water, and Air. Butcher’s house was soon made safe. The front portion of the house occupied by Air. Greenbank was gutted, while the back rooms were also badly burnt. It was an old seven-roomed Avooden. building of one storey, with corrugated iron side walls. None of the contents was saved. Mr. F. Steele, tvho resides with Mr. Butcher, gave the alarm. Airs. Greenbank says that she retired at about 10.30 p.m. and was awakened by the smoke in her room. She had only time to escape through the win(loav with a young child. Air. Greenbank was away. The indications are that the fire started in the front portion of the house. The Fire Brigade are to be congratulated on restricting the damage to Mr. Butcher’s house, Avhicli was scorched. It was separated from.the burning house by only a few feet. The insurance on Air. Greenbank’a furniture is understood to ijjS£2oo f while the Hare Estate had a of £SOO on the house in the Standard Office.
