DIVORCE AND MARRIAGE

POSITION IH AMERICA. ASTOUNDING FIGURES. fress Association —Electric Telegraph—Copyrl;' (Received Wednesday, 9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Tuesday. The Census Bureau’s survey of marriage and divorce in the United States in 1924 shows a continuance of the decrease in the number of marriages, and an increase' in the number of divorces, noted previously. Marriages during 1924 totalled 1,178,206, as compared with 1,233,924 in 1923, a decrease of 15,718, or 3.7 per cent. Only ten States have reported au increased number of marriages. Divorces decreased in eighteen States, but the increase in other States more than off-set these decreases. Surprise- is caused by the figures showing New York, which i-s reputed to be the centre of wickedness, had but one divorce out cf twenty-three marriages, leading all other -sections of the country. Oregon and Nebraska show one divorce for every two or throe marriages.— Aus. and X. 7?. Cable Assn.
