IMMIGRATION.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHEME. ARCHBISHOP AVER-ILL "S VIEWS. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Commenting on the proposal to bring out four hundred immigrants yearly to New Zealand under the auspices of the Church of England, Archbishop Averill, at a meeting of the C.E.M.S., said that English authorities were prepared to contribute £4OO towards the establishment of the scheme here. They hoped to send 200 to the North sland and 200 to the South Island each year. They appeared specially keen on sending children to the Dominion.

Some people, said the Archbishop, particularly in the farming districts, would be glad to get young people, but would simply make slaves of them. Difficulties presented themselves, and he felt rather staggered at the thought that the . Church should undertake to introduce such numbers at the present time. He would, however, bring the matter before the standing committee of the General Synod at its meeting about three weeks hence.
