INFANTILE PARALYSIS.

DOMINION RETURNS. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Health Department has received the following notifications of cases of infantile paralysis for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. to-day: Ricearton, St. Kalda, Hamilton, Leamington, one each. THE DEATH ROLL. WELLINGTON, Friday. The infantile paralysis epidemic, which affected New Zealand for five months, cost 166 lives. There were in all 1257 cases, and an unexpectedly large number have recovered. Iu flic 3 916 epidemic there were 123 deaths. Wellington and district suffered more severely than any other in the recent epidemic. The restrictions reimposed on the whole of the ITokianga County because of the infantile paralysis in that area have now been lifted. District medical officer have received instructions from the Health Department to .close their epidemic books and to furnish reports before the middle of June. All the data will be incorporated in a comprehensive report to be issued immediately after compilation. FOUR CASES NOTIFIED. Although gratifyingly small in number, cases of infantile paralysis still continue to lie reported. Four cases were reported during the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. yesterday, the details being as follow: —Christchurch 2, Elgin 3, Dunedin 1. CONVALESCENT SERUM. VALUE OF ITS USE. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Dr. Telford, medical health officer, reported to-day that there are 35 children suffering from infantile paralysis in the Public Hospital, but all of them are getting on very well, and the medical staff believe that practically all the little patients ultimately will be left without any material after-weakness. This result, Dr. Telford added, must be attributed to the use of the convalescent serum froni the time of outbreak in the Christchurch health district, which 'comprises Canterbury and the West Coast.

Until noon to-day 214 positive cases have been reported, and there have been 27 deaths. Three cases were reported this morning—two in the city, including a man (37), a positive case, and onevit Ashburton.
