At the Wellington on Saturday, T.- Oakley was third in the one mile cycle race, and also in the three miles race. K. Eastwood, of Masterton, was second in the final of the 120 yards handicap. R. A. McKenzie (ser.) wa. sthird i:i the 440 yards hurdle handicap. v

The hero of the afternoon was whose brilliant performance in the one: mile fiat race provided one of th«best exiiibtions it would be possible t<xsee. To cover the distance in 4miir 24sec was indeed a meritorious performance, being only 5 3-osee below the Australian and New Zealand record of 4min 18 2-ssee. As it was he put up his fastest time, and lowered the standard time for the distance by six seconds. From the start the race was slightly in Rose’s favour, although “Georgie” Hyde, who is a pigmy beside Rose in stature, was a serious challenger all the. way, and led over aeouple of laps. Rose was in splendid condition and at the top of his form. He has a steady—almost an ambling — stride, and he gives the impression that he is making no effort. The secret of his success lies in his consistency.. Until the last lap he seems to Jfcget the field, and plugs on are the tactics that have built up his reputation, and if Rose retains the lead on the run home his opponents haver%. little chance of heading him off. So it proved on Saturday* Rose led Hyde- » comfortably over the first lap, but dropped behind a little on the second and third, Hyde being slightly ahead. Half way round on the last lap the Wairarapa man put on a big spurt and forged ahead, winning by 15 yards. Th» crowd gave Rose an enthusiastic ’Accept ion as he returned to the dressing room.
