STRIKE IN ADELAIDE. DEMAND FOR INCREASED WAGES. Cress Association—Electric Telegraph—Copyright ADELAIDE, Thursday. The city is threatened with a meat famine as the result of a strike of the drivers of motors engaged in delivering meat from the abattoirs. .They are demanding an increase in wages from £4 15s to £5 7s weekly. Most of the butchers are closing owing to lack of supplies. A few have only sufficient to last to the end of the week. —Press Assn.

THE MELBOURNE RIOTS. MELBOURNE, Thursday. Mr. H. S. W. Lawson, the State Premier, to-day reiterated to a deputation of city business men representing the Biot Sufferers’ Defence League, that the Government accepted no responsibility for the damage to property caused during the recent riots, but in view of the representations made he promised to consider the question.— Press Assn.

GAOL PREFERRED.

SYDNEY, Thursday

As a protest against fines imposed upon them for leaving work at the Ivanhoe colliery ten weeks ago, since when it has been idle, 70 miners marched four deep to Lithgow, declaring their intention to go to gaol rather than pay. About 30 men relented, and paid their fines. The police told the others to go home until warrants were issued. The proceedings were quite orderly. The trouble arose over a dispute about hewing rates. —Press Assn. • NORTHERN COLLIERIES DISPUTE. (Received Friday, 11.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.
