PRO-GERMANS IN CONVENTION.
A gang of pro-Germans, calling themselves the Republican Party Convention, is meeting in Chicago and elsewhere in the United States to select a candidate for the American Presidency and the cableman —poor, simple creature—thinks that this Dominion is terribly interested in the matter. He is forwarding piffle by the yard concerning turkey feathers, perspiring bands, and other- equally uninteiesting episodes of this gathering of ‘‘ldiotic Yankees.” Most civilised people know the corruption and graft which obtains at these party conventions and elections in America, and to attempt to turn a pro-German Republican Convention into something which the world is waiting for open-mouthed is ludicrous in the extreme. The Republican Partv did its best to keep the United States out of the war, because its leaders were in the pay of Germany. The democracy of the United States is on a plane with that of the Japanese of today, and the Germans* of pre-war days. There is no such thing as political freedom in the United States. Its elections create a hot-bed of corruption and do not- represent the voice of the people, because the latter h'afe really very little say in the matter. The world does not care who is president of the most corrupt nation in the world, let alone what its Republican Party does in convention.
