RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

WON BY MASTERTONIAN. A BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENT. The Rhodes Scholar Selection 1 Committee met at Government House,'Wellington, to-day, states ; a Wellington Press Association telegram, and selected Harold Gladstone Miller (Victoria University College) las the Rhodes Scholar for New Zealand, in place of Mr 11. A. Mackenzie (sou of Professor 11. Mackenzie), who has. relinquished the scholarship in order to keep aj N.Z.K.F. Seliolarship which die is now holding in France. The other candidate was a graduate, from the Auckland University College. Originally there were four candidates selected by the University Councils, and these were reduced to two. Mr Miller, who is 22 years of age, is the youngest son of Mrs Nellie Mil-, ler, of Bentley street, Masterton, and was educated at Masterton. Mr Miller has had a brilliant scholastic career. He won his B.A. degree and then his M.A. degree. Besides winning, among others, a Jacob Joseph Research Scholarship, he was leeently awarded, a free trip to England; and back in connection with his sue-; cesses nt Victoria College. Recognised as one of the most brilliant scholars in the University lie has obtained the highest honours' possible in open competition with the whole of New; Zealand. , , This is the first time that the Rhodes Scholarship has come to the Wairaiapa, and Mr Miller lias not only secured; the highest scholastic hohonrs, biit luj has brought honour to the Wairarapa; aml especially the old" school at which he received his primary and secondary education—the Masterton District High School.
