MASTERTON CLUB. ! The weekly club night was held Jastt; evening, there being a . good attendance of members. Messrs Thirties Kamble Welch and A. Morgan, beingunable to attend/ their ladder gamesare held over to June 3rd. Mr J. T.. Dagg, who was to have played Mr H... L. Thirl le, owing to the absence of . his opponent, spent the evening coaching; the boys. The following games were played off:A. Clemas 1, R. J. Barton 2, finnt. seore.

Writing from Johnsonville, Mr G. A.. Jones, who for so many years was the captain and mainstay of the local club* mentions that he met F. J. Brooker iit the final round for the Ngaio championship last Monday evening, and snatched victory on the 20th move. Masterton members have telegraphed their congratulations to their life member at his success.

The telegraphic match, Wellington vi Canterbury,- is scheduled to commence next . Saturday evening, seventeen boards being engaged. According to reports both clubs are in first-class fighting trim, and the usual hard-fought contest is likely to result. Further correspondence from Auckland during the week emphasises how much the recent telegraphic match was enjoyed by botli clubs, and again repeats the hope of another meeting. Thematch evidently lias cemented a strong friendship between the clubs collectively and the players individually, which, after all, is the main object of the game.
