HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—iWilli reference to your leader yesterlay re hydro-electric po\sbr, in which you specially asked me to state whether the Wairarapa had been cut out of the Mangahao scheme. Iu au interview- which other members of the committee and myself had with Mr Birks quite recently, Mr Birks was.not prepared to say defiuitely that the Wairarapa had been cut out, but he. pointed out that at most there would be only 20,000 li.pt. available from the Mangahao, and the district which it was proposed to supply, not including the Wairarapa, required for power purposes alone 40,000 h.p., without making any provision for household requirements such as cooking, etc. I think it inadvisable at the present time to express a definite opinion regarding the Waiohihe scheme until Mr Toogood, who has associated with him two engineers representing Government departments, is "in ’ a position to make his report. This Mr Toogood has promised would be available for the committee meeting next Monday week, May 3rd; It is, however, probable that this report will not be made public until the new. board is elected, the election of which takes place on the 7th of next month. I note Mr Phillips makes the statement that Mr Parry condemns small local schemes. Mr Parry, in his statements to invself and others, so far from condemning the Waiohine scheme as outlined in Mr Cook’s report, has repeatedly stated that it is a very fine local scheme and one that should be gone on with. —I am, etc., J. C. COOPER. Masterton, April 22nd, 1920.
