BANKERS UNEASY.

SERIOUS WORLD SITUATION. V (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Monday.) An International Financial Conference, to which the Council of the League of Nations has invited twentylive countries, including New Zealand and other Dominions, is to be held at Brussels at the end of May. The conference is the result of representations from the leading bankers to their representative Governments, asking for a meeting to consider the serious world situation. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Austen'. Chamberlain) expressed v his willingness that the British Government should be represented, on the understanding that the Treasury could not participate in any A'heme involving large Government loans. The American Secretary of Finance © (Mr Carter Glass), replied that the American Govenimenl was opposed to further Government assistance, and was unable to participate in the Conference, - but was willing that the Chamber of Commerce should be represented unofficially. These replies indicate that direct Government loans will play a most subordinate part in the financial 'reconstruction of Europe, and the conference will m'ainly consider means to enable credit to again flow in the ordinary channels.
