SHIPPING SHORTAGE AFFECTS SALES. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) i CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The shipping disabilities are having a. hampering effect on the volume of business.' In pre-war days two boats each week left Lyttelton for. Auckland, and now the average is one in three weeks. Transactions in chaff are verv restricted on account of the Lack of vessels, and at the present time there is a keen demand for chaff in. tho North ' Island. At the ruling rates in Canterbury there is a good margin for North Island business, but the market here is inactive, simply because merchants cannot secure shipment.

Oats are first at 5s to 5s Id at: country stations, and a good deal of business is being done at the former figure. Algerians are being inquired for to some extent. There has been an easing in the clover market,'and there are consignments on sale of 60 tons of Italian cow grass at 2555. This naturally reduced the price of local red clover, which is now nominally at Is Sd to Is lid; however, 2s Id was paid since the imported seed was placed on the maiket. For particularly good heavy- seed there has been a sympathetic easingin price for white clover, but as supplies are scarce the imported seed will, to a large extent, meet the requirements rather than cause a slump m white clover. *

Partridge and, Prussian, blue peas are coming forward, but white Ivorysare not offering to any extent. Prussian blues are nominally worth Its to t2s, and a good deal of business in Partridge is being done at Ss. The potato market is firmer than last week, anil growers show little disposition to do business at u*ler*£4 10s per ton. The reputed big*yielijs, and probably over-supply notwithstanding, business has been' done at £4 b>s during the week.
